rules about crossing the street.

i work on a campus that has a few crosswalks with flashing stop signs, and drivers know they need to stop for pedestrians. therefore, i despise people who do not cross at the crosswalks. it doesn't bother me so much if there is no traffic, and they run across the street. however, people often walk slowly across a busy street, and it drives me crazy.

yesterday carl and i went for a walk because it was actually warm here. we were leaving our cul-de-sac and had to cross a main road. typically i just wait for traffic to clear, and then i walk. carl decided to push the button (i'm not sure what to call it, but the button you press when you want to cross the street, so then the light changes). well traffic cleared before the light changed, and carl began to cross the street.

NO! if you press the button, you can't cross until the light changes!

he did not understand this at all. he said my "rules" don't make sense. "you have to cross at intersections, but you'll go even if the light is red?" yes.

"but if i push the button, we have to wait for the light to turn green?" yes.
